I recently read a report produced by the Milton & Rose D. Friedman Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to giving parents an educational choice for their children. The study details that 1/3 of NC high school students dropped out of school in 2005. This disheartening number of young people leaving school before graduation figures to cost NC over $150 million per year: 1) lost revenue from taxes and fees 2) increased Medicaid costs and 3) increased incarceration costs. These numbers only continue to illustrate the philosophy that "no man is an island unto himself." As a society, as a community, we must all do our part in being responsible citizens who contribute to our "neighbor's" wellfare; for, in doing so, we fulfill one of our God-given roles of supporting "one another." Live for others, and you will really live.
